Deck and Porch Lighting

Lamps Plus Tip: The first thing most people think about when they shop for outdoor lighting is discouraging burglars and vandals from invading their property. Beyond motion detectors and halogen bulbs, however, exterior accent lighting can beautify the look of your home at night, help visitors find their way to the door, and focus viewers' attention on the most attractive features of your building and grounds. Outdoor lighting should illuminate your house without shining into your neighbors' bedrooms. Plan the angles and placement of your exterior house lights with consideration for others. Also take into account the need to prevent "light pollution." This means pointing lights downward whenever possible so as not to contribute to "skyglow," which is the light that makes it difficult to see the night sky in populated areas.
